Places

In this, I will look at certain photographers and disseminate their work. Firstly, I will look at Susan Derges. Her work deals with (according to Susan Derges - Biography | Purdy Hicks Gallery "exploring the relationship between the observer and the observed; the self and nature or the imagined and the 'real'. She endeavours to manifest or capture i invisible scientific and natural processes - the physical appearance of sound vibration, the evolution of frogspawn or the cycles of the moon"

She takes a close look at nature and observes its relationship to its environment. She is also influenced through closely observing nature in its natural environment. She is also influenced in all the natural elements such as earth, water, fire and air. All her work emphasises this. The concept here is the natural and how nature interacts within this environment. In terms of contextual influences on her work, we are living in a dangerous period where global warming and climate change threaten our existence and the natural world. Her work documents the synthesis of nature and its environment- where they both live in harmony.

SERIES | Susan Derges

Unlike Derges, Sian Bonnell's work focusses on the material world that is indoors also. From my perspective, her work takes the mundane and ordinary and transforms it through photography into something exciting and worthy of attention.

Her work uses the same attention to detail and environment seen in Susan Derges' work, but her work finds inspiration indoors instead of outdoors also. She finds things that the camera would normally avoid. The items she photographs are not pretty, have no intrinsic wealth and are mundane. However, she uses rubbish and places it in a sterile environment .

Lynda Laird

Lynda Laird is a photographer from St Leonard on Sea. She uses photography to provoke memory by photographing such objects as WW2 bunkers or old building such as asylums which hold a macabre history.. As the example above demonstrates, she uses slow exposures and filters to make the sky scape seem dreamy. According to About - Lynda's Portfolio (lyndalaird.com) "She focuses on long-term bodies of work: primarily looking at landscape and the traces of memory in these spaces.  She is interested in exploring ways of showing what is invisible to the naked eye, often employing camera less techniques and working with the materiality of specific landscapes in an attempt to bring an element or trace of its history into the work"

In terms of my practice, I have always lived by the seaside. I was born in Aberdeen, moved to Fleetwood as a child and settled in Blackpool and St Annes as an adult. The coast has played a huge part in my life, and I enjoy documenting the changes in visitor numbers, weather and building works. Below are a few images by me of Blackpool through the year. The context of my work is seasons and their affect on the coastline.
