An example of photographic language
Lawn takes up 2/3rds of the image. Creating a sense of emptiness and dislocation.
Trees have a dark overbearing presence which adds to the gloomy atmosphere evident.
Parents are separated by a table. Seem isolated and detached as individuals.
Wife is for show and not in a loving relationship with the male.
Child is turned away. Not a loving family.
The title which A Family on their Lawn on a Sunday isn't what's shown on the image, this is contradicted.
The image above shows a female turned away from the viewer. She is not engaging with the photographer/viewer. She is in a state of being half undressed and has a family view of a couple, house and the sun on her upper back. This has been produced by somebody else. The scene is childlike and idealistic- it feels the lady has missed out on this kind of stable upbringing and has had a troubled childhood.
